Frequently Asked Questions – Student Visas (Subclass 500)
❓ 1. How long does a Student visa take to process?
Processing times vary depending on your country of passport, education provider, and individual circumstances. On average, most applications are processed within 4 to 8 weeks, but complex cases may take longer.
❓ 2. Can I work on a Student visa?
Yes. You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, and unlimited hours during school breaks. Make sure your work does not interfere with your course progress.
❓ 3. What is the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement?
The GTE requirement ensures that you are coming to Australia to study, not for other purposes like long-term migration. You must show evidence of your study intentions, background, and plans after graduation.
❓ 4. Can my partner or family come with me?
Yes. Eligible family members (partner and dependent children) can be included in your application. Your partner can also work in Australia, subject to certain conditions.
❓ 5. What is a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)?
A CoE is an official document issued by your Australian education provider confirming your enrolment in a CRICOS-registered course. You must have a CoE before applying for your Student visa.
❓ 6. Do I need health insurance?
Yes. You must hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire duration of your stay in Australia. We can help you arrange the right cover.
❓ 7. Can I stay in Australia after I finish my studies?
Yes. You may be eligible for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), which allows you to live, study, and work in Australia temporarily after you graduate. Conditions depend on your qualification.
❓ 8. What if my visa is refused?
If your visa is refused, you may have review rights depending on your situation. We can assist with AAT reviews or guide you through alternative visa options.
❓ 9. Can I change my course or education provider after arriving in Australia?
Yes, but there are rules. If you change your course or provider within the first 6 months, you usually need permission and a new CoE. Speak with a registered migration agent before making changes.
❓ 10. How can a migration agent help me?
A registered migration agent can help you:
-
Understand visa requirements
-
Prepare a strong application
-
Avoid common mistakes and delays
-
Explore post-study or family visa options
