Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMA)

DAMA is a labour agreement between the Australian Government and regional authorities. It allows employers in specific areas to sponsor skilled workers for roles that are not on the standard occupation lists.

Benefits of DAMA:

  • Broader occupation lists

  • Concessions on English, age, and salary

  • Regional focus

  • Pathways to PR (via 482/186 visas under a labour agreement)

Regions with DAMA agreements include:

  • Northern Territory

  • South Australia

  • Far North Queensland

  • Orana (NSW)

  • Victoria’s Great South Coast and Wimmera Southern Mallee

  • Pilbara and Goldfields (WA)

Sponsorship for a work visa

To sponsor a worker for a visa (such as the 482 or 186 visa), the business must:

  • Be an approved sponsor (or apply to become one)

  • Be actively and lawfully operating in Australia

  • Demonstrate a genuine need for the role

  • Offer a market salary rate that meets visa thresholds

  • Provide labour market testing (in most cases) to show no suitable local workers were found

  • Comply with Australian workplace and immigration laws

Additional for DAMA Sponsorship:

  • Enter into a labour agreement with a participating regional authority

  • Meet any concessions or specific criteria set under that DAMA agreement
